Department of Physics at PUC-Rio

The Department of Physics, founded in December 1959, is committed to promoting scientific knowledge, teaching and research, as well as disseminating science, as it has done throughout its trajectory, with visits by high school students to the Department’s laboratories to demonstrate scientific concepts in practice; laboratory workshops for high school teachers; and science fairs, always disclosing to society what knowledge is produced at the University.

To that end, it participates in the World Pendulum Alliance Project, a development project in the field of higher education, co-financed by the Erasmus + Program of the European Union. This Program aims to implement a global network of remote experiments.

PUC’s participation takes place with the implementation of a primary pendulum and 11 secondary ones.

The primary pendulum, initially assembled and configured at PUC-Rio (Figure 1), was transferred to the Planetarium of the City of Rio de Janeiro (Figure 2), as it would then have the possibility of serving a significant number of students, 2,000 visitors per year.

The secondaries are being set up in different parts of the city of Rio de Janeiro (Figure 3).

The location of the primary pendulum: -22.9738, -43.226
